FOR PHYSICIANS, NURSE PRACTITIONERS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS
Care and Management of the Patient with HIV Disease
Held twice a year in New Orleans
Register

A 2-day clinical course with curriculum developed by Infectious Disease faculty of LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. Includes lectures, case discussions and a clinical rotation and is designed to benefit community clinicians with little HIV experience, as well as those who are accustomed to treating patients with HIV infection. Prescribed credits through the American Academy of Family Physicians.

By the end of this program, the participant will be able to:
1) understand the epidemiology and pathogenesis of HIV disease and the implications for HIV transmission prevention
2) provide information on testing for HIV infection and the appropriate initial evaluation for an HIV+ person; review the acute retroviral syndrome
3) review available antiretroviral medications, including dose and side effects
4) determine the appropriate use of antiviral medications and prophylactic medication regimens in the treatment of HIV/AIDS
5) discuss the importance of instructing patients in means of prevention
6) practice differential diagnosis and treatment of common co-morbid conditions such as hepatitis and pulmonary diseases
7) review common HIV-related viral, fungal and parasitic infections
8) review gender-specific issues, perinatal transmission and pediatric concerns
9) describe special needs of HIV/AIDS patients at the end of life
10) review mitochondrial toxicity, bacterial and mycobacterial infections and malignancies
11) review the recommended approach for prophylaxis for occupational exposure
12) review key points regarding co-infection with hepatitis C
13) discuss the various forms of resistance testing
14) review the resources for assistance for HIV+ persons throughout the region.

 

FOR DENTISTS AND DENTAL PROFESSIONALS
Oral Health Management for the HIV/AIDS Patient
Held once a year in New Orleans

A 1-day clinical course with curriculum developed by Infectious Disease faculty of LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry. Includes lectures, case discussions and a clinical experience and is designed to benefit oral health practitioners with little HIV experience, as well as those who are accustomed to treating patients with HIV infection. Continuing dental education credits through the Louisiana Academy of C.D.E. and LSU School of Dentistry.

By the end of this program, the participant will be able to:
1) provide initial medical evaluation of the HIV-infected dental patient
2) recognize and treat common oral health conditions of HIV-infected dental patients
3) understand current guidelines regarding use of antiviral medications and prophylactic medication regimens in the treatment of HIV/AIDS
4) diagnose and manage oral lesions in the HIV-infected dental patient
5) implement appropriate infection control guidelines and post-exposure prophylaxis in dental care facilities

 

FOR NURSES AND CLINICAL SERVICE PROVIDERS
Comprehensive Management of the Patient with HIV Disease
Held twice a year in New Orleans

A 2-day course that trains nurses and clinical service providers to provide comprehensive care to HIV-infected patients throughout the continuum of the disease. Includes lectures and a clinical rotation. Contact hours through LSU Health Sciences Center School of Nursing.


By the end of this program, the participant will be able to:
1) understand the epidemiology and pathogenesis of HIV disease and the implications for HIV transmission
2) discuss the manifestations, baseline labs, and nursing interventions of asymptomatic HIV disease
3) discuss the challenges inherent in caring for women and children with HIV disease
4) discuss the concepts fundamental to providing effective education on nutrition
5) recognize symptoms and complications of HIV disease
6) interpret laboratory parameters in light of clinical progression; apply PEP protocol in appropriate situations
7) improve skills for assessment of: patient needs, impact in care, adherence, legal/ethical concerns, funding of patient care by Ryan White CARE Act
8) discuss the effect of substance abuse on effective treatment for HIV disease
9) participate in clinical management of HIV patients
